Error 550

Hi everybody. Sorry for the obscure subject but hopefully you will understand it in a minute. First though some background.

I have a Linux Fedora Core 5 box, with James 2.3.0. I have set up a mailing list and there is an automatic process that runs every day on the Linux box and sends an email to the mailing list if necessary. Lately some recipients are not receiving the emails and I receive an email back from James saying that it couldn't deliver the email becuase of error 550.

Although I have bought the domain troccoli.it I do not have a fixed IP address. Being at home I have an account with one ISP, and the dynamic IP assigned by the ISP is shared between the Web/Mail Server (the Linux box) and my laptop. Outlook Express on my laptop is set to retrieve the emails from troccoli.it but to send emails using my ISP. Everything is fine on my laptop.

I don't remember why (I think I ran into some problems) I do not use James as SMTP from my laptop, but I must have thought that for the same reason I couldn't use it for the mailing list either.

So, in that script that automatically sends emails, I use sendmail which seemed to do the job (only lately I am experiencing the error 550 problem). Because troccoli.it is not a known domain I think it might have been black listed or something. Also because I don't have a fixed IP address I cannot authenticate the origin of the email for the mailing list (I'm thinking of something like Sender Id).

If everything I said so far makes sense, then maybe you can help me. How can I set James up so that:
    a) I can James in that script I was talking about
    b) I can use my ISP as SMTP in James

Thanks
Giulio

Stefano,

Thank you very much again. The issue is now resolved (both actually).

I have indeed added tiscali in the <gateway> but that wasn't enough. I had
to add a list of allowed IPs (in my case I chose all of my network
192.168.69.*) to both RemoteAddrNotInNetwork AND authorizedAddresses. It
makes sense when I think about it.

Anyway, as I said everything works fine now. Thanks again.

Giulio

Re: Error 550

Your IP has been blacklisted at least on combined.njabl.org.

Try to insert your IP in this page and read why:
http://combined.njabl.org/lookup.html

Btw if your James is on a dynamic IP this will happen often, you should
better use the gateway option.

Re: Error 550

Thanks Stefano.

The actual message after the error is different for one email address to the
other. Two examples are

Error message:
550 Your e-mail was rejected for policy reasons on this gateway. Reasons for
rejection may be related to content such as obscene language, graphics, or
spam-like characteristics (or) other reputation problems. For sender
troubleshooting information, please go to http://postmaster.msn.com. Please
note: if you are an end-user please contact your E-mail/Internet Service
Provider for assistance.

Error message:
550 5.7.1 RBL combined.njabl.org

Error message:
550 Email from your Email Service Provider is currently blocked by Verizon
Online's anti-spam system. The email "sender" or Email Service Provider may
visit http://www.verizon.net/whitelist and request removal of the block.

I will try and set the <gateway> and use the python script.

This is because probably you connect to James not from 127.0.0.1 but
from 192.168.69.22.
Just add an user to James and use SMTP AUTHentication to send emails or
add the 192.168.69.22 to the authorized addresses (scan the config.xml
for this).

Re: Error 550

Ok, I have change my script to use the sendmail.py instead of sendmail, and
after some triggering it seems to work.

Now, I have added tiscali.co.uk in the <gateway> but I cannot send email
using Outlook Explorer on my laptop. James complains with

ERROR smtpserver: Rejected message - 192.168.69.22 not authorized to relay
to hotmail.com

This does not apply to hotmail only of course. Is there maybe a list of IP I
can authorize for relay. I was thinking, if possible, to add all IPs in my
network, something like 192.168.69.*.

Giulio

Sorry, but how do I use the python script?

The instrucions inside says to create a symlink. Does it mean a symlink to
the script called sendmail? (ln -s sendmail.py sendmail)

What is exactly the message you receive? There is more after the 550...

To use your ISP SMTP for delivery you use the <gateway> configuration in
the RemoteDelivery mailet.

To send an email to james from linux you can try using the python
scripts you find here:
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/james/server/branches/v2.3/src/python/sendmail.py

Because troccoli.it is not a known domain I think it might have been black listed or something. Also because I don't have a fixed IP address I cannot authenticate the origin of the email for the mailing list (I'm thinking of something like Sender Id).
