BASICAuthIFramePortlet - new microsoft patch causes real problems

Has anyone else run into the problem with Basic Authentication where the
@ symbol is no longer allowed in your browers:

This renders the current implementation of BASICAuthIFramePortlet
unusable for those that have updated their browsers with this security
patch from Microsoft.  An option is to somehow bury the user credentials
in the header, but does anyone know how to do this?  I imagine this
issue will become more prevalent as this patch is applied throughout
organizations.
