It looks to me like Xerces is required

I don't know if this is different in the development branch, but I am trying
to use the XMLParserLiaison interface to fit Xalan 1.0.1 to a different XML
DOM parser (an old version of OpenXML). I find that XSLTEngineImpl.process
calls switchLiaisonsIfNeeded, which tries to use the XercesLiaison if both
the source and destination are Xerces DOMs.

Unfortunately, this will fail catastrophically if the Xerces classes are not
on the classpath. Shouldn't it (at least) catch
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError?

Also, ElemTemplateElement.getNamespaceForPrefix(String prefix,
org.w3c.dom.Node context) will cause an infinite recursion unless you
override it.

Finally, I clicked on the bug reporting link on the Xalan Overview page, and
got "You don't have permission to access /bugs/ on this server."
