[DISCUSS][Linux]Drop distro specific RPMs

This time I installed not the "suse" desktop integration RPM but the
"freedesktop" one, and it worked without problems. If someone confirm
that this is the same for fedora and mandriva then I think we can
safely drop those distro specific RPMs and offer only one, like we
offer only one .deb on the debian packages.

What do you think?

Ricardo

Thanks for providing this link...

A slight edit to my results. Only my personal account was a bit off
after installation, probably due to some changes I had made previously
to get the icons to show up correctly. My "guest" account was set up
perfectly after the freedesktop.org installation.

I spent some time this am looking into the freedesktop.org site in terms
of what it does, what it is trying to accomplish etc. It certainly would
be great if we could go this way. I look forward to hearing about
others's experiences.

Ok, my very preliminary research shows that the majority of RPM based
distros (Fedora, RedHat, opensuse,) have been implementing
freedesktop.org specs for a while ( > 2 yrs), and the the
architecture/spec seems to be in use in debian-based distros as well --
Debian, Ubuntu. We would need to ascertain if this suite is implemented
by default in those.

yes, the specs for freedesktop.org (locations, etc.) are different than
for standard locations of maybe gnome or kde.

The main thing about using this exclusively is how well/how much a
particular distro implements the freedesktop.org spec I think.

I'm researching that now... it may take a little bit of time though.
Looks like RedHat actually started this ball rolling so I can only
assume that Fedora folks wold be OK, here. Some of the others I don't know.

Browsing through the spec, they look quite different process through a

Good! One more thing. I just downloaded the "deb" packaging, and note
that the ONLY desktop install there is for debian, no freedesktop. :/

Folks downloading the "deb" packaging would therefore not see this
option. Debian (and its derivatives) support a variety of graphical
environments, and the freedesktop option would probably work fine, but
they won't be using RPM. Our next step might be to investigate the
creation scripts and see if we can build a "deb" package for the
freedesktop option for installation testing. I would love to have my
Linux Mint buddy test this out. :)

Another user with no problems on Fedora 17, 64 bits (on a virtual machine).
So we have openSUSE, a derivative from mandriva (PCLinuxOS) and fedora.

A successful history with PCLinuxOS i686 KDE-4.8.3 kernel 2.6.3. The same
user reports no problem with openSUSE Tumbleweed kernel-3.5.3 x86_64 with
KDE-4.8.5 and openSUSE-12.2 kernel-3.4.6 x86_64 with KDE-4.9.1

This sounds useful. We should collect the distribution information,
obviously. I tested it in CentOS 5 and it works fine; which is is a good
sign, as this is the free Linux distribution with the oldest libraries
I could find. IMHO we should support at least those versions that are
still supported by their distribution, and versions with EOL reached do
not count.

I wonder what is the diff from one file to the next, I think freedesktop
was integrated into more current versions of the distros to provide a
common interface for launcher layout. But the issue could be if it's tried
on older distros before the freedesktop standard was integrated on the menu
structure. (This is only a theory).

OK, I finally did this. I uninstalled the opensuse menu setup and just
installed the freedestop.org rpm. Everything is working. But I too am on
opensuse. It would be great to have folks from other distros test this out.

The only odd thing I'm experiencing, which I remember from before, is that
some of the icons in my default kickoff app launcher (kde 4.7) are NOT
there for some of the AOO modules, and yet some are. So, I will attempt to
track this down. In the normal KDE menu they are fine.

It would certainly be nice to maintain a single desktop interface for Linux.

openSUSE 11.4, 64 bits, with KDE SC 4.8.4. On a couple of weeks maybe
I'll try with openSUSE 12.2.

The freedesktop package provided the menu entries, the mime type
icons... and I can use krunner to launch any AOO app.
