[VOTE] Release Apache Pekko(incubating) Management 1.0.0-RC2
Hello Pekko Community,
This is a call for a vote to release Apache Pekko(incubating)
Management version 1.0.0-RC2.
There are some license fixes since 1.0.0-RC1.

The release candidate:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/incubator/pekko/MANAGEMENT-1.0.0-RC2/
This release has been signed with a PGP key available here:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/incubator/pekko/KEYS
Release Notes:
https://pekko.apache.org/docs/pekko-management/current/release-notes/index.html
Git branch for the release:
https://github.com/apache/incubator-pekko-management/tree/v1.0.0-RC2
Git commit ID: c1bab5a116b7f4c654f9d7ae3886a344e0f3771e
Please download, verify, and test.
We have also staged jars in the Apache Nexus Repository. These were
built with the same code
as appears in this Source Release Candidate. We would appreciate if
users could test with these too.
If anyone finds any serious problems with these jars, please also
notify us on this thread.
https://repository.apache.org/content/groups/staging/org/apache/pekko/
In sbt, you can add this resolver.
resolvers += "Apache Pekko Staging" at
"https://repository.apache.org/content/groups/staging"
The VOTE will pass if we have more positive votes than negative votes
and there must be a minimum of 3 approvals from Pekko PPMC members.
Anyone voting in favour of the release, could you please provide a
list of the checks you have done?
The vote will be left open until 21:00 UTC on 8 August 2023.

Hi,
Also I was able to compile by setting the version number.

Hi,
+1 (binding)
Strictly being able to compile from source is required, but this is an incubating project, and I assume this will be fixed next release. But it is a good idea to test this before voting on an RC. The release manager can still decide that a new RC should be made.
I checked:
- Incubating in name
- signatures and hashes are fine
- disclaimer exists
- LICENSE and NOTICE are correct
- Most files have headers
- No unexpected binary files
- Can't compile from source
Error compiling is:
[error] java.lang.RuntimeException: found version conflict(s) in library dependencies; some are suspected to be binary incompatible:
[error] [error] * org.apache.pekko:pekko-management-cluster-bootstrap_2.13:HEAD+20230808-1640 (semver-spec) is selected over HEAD
etc etc
Kind Regards,
Justin

Some but maybe not all these issues can be worked around when using
the source tgz by setting a version number in sbt.
We should probably make an issue, on initial glance I think the problem is
the version is maybe not being set correctly i.e. when you check out
pekko projects via git the version is dynamically set via git tag which is
different to if you just download the source. Usually this shouldn't be
a problem but this project might be doing something more unique.
Back on topic, I will have a look at the release candidate later today.

Thanks for the hint, I missed that. I usually checkout the git repo anyway.
For me it is fine since it is documented and works when checking out from
Github.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Pekko(incubating) Management 1.0.0-RC2
Posted by PJ Fanning <fa...@gmail.com>.
Hi Nicolas,
I guess the Akka/Pekko project was built up on a git repo and there
are features of the build that assume you are using a checked out git
repo.
Some but maybe not all these issues can be worked around when using
the source tgz by setting a version number in sbt.
The version number setting is documented in
https://github.com/apache/incubator-pekko-management#running-the-build
Example:
sbt "set ThisBuild / version := \"1.0.0-RC1\"; +publishM2"
When you have a git checkout, the version number used by default in
sbt is based on the last git tag. When you don't have a git check, the
default version is HEAD plus a timestamp.
The integration tests are the most complicated part of the
incubator-pekko-management build. They require that you have already
built the incubator-pekko-management jars and that they can be
accessed.
I'm really not sure how to proceed. I think people are probably going
to have to be pragmatic with the source distributions. They are
required by the ASF. With a bit of trial and error you can use the
source distribution to do build and test. We can't release the Maven
Central jars if people are not happy with the source release. So if
people start voting -1, it's back to the drawing board. I really don't
know how much effort is required to make the
incubator-pekko-management source distribution so simple to use that
you can just type in one command and everything works.
When I run builds locally, I often look at the GitHub CI workflow yml
files to work out the order of the events needed to get certain tests
to work.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Pekko(incubating) Management 1.0.0-RC2
Posted by PJ Fanning <fa...@apache.org>.
Thanks Matthew. It would be nice to get to the bottom of the file
attribute issue. I agree that it doesn't affect the usability of the
jars built for the RC2.
I think it is safe to proceed with this vote but hope that we can have
a solution for the next pekko management RC.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Pekko(incubating) Management 1.0.0-RC2
Posted by Matthew de Detrich <ma...@aiven.io.INVALID>.
So upon further inspection there is definitely a difference but it appears
to be on file
attributes for files (such as NOTICE) that are added to the jars. This can
be confirmed
by using jardiff which doesn't report any difference since the actual
bytecode (which is
what's critical) is the same.
I will look into what's causing this, it appears to be either a
misconfiguration of
sbt-reproducible-builds and/or feature it lacks.
Retracting my previous -1 vote and giving +1

Is there anyone else with time to try out the sbt-reproducible build
checks described at the link below?

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Pekko(incubating) Management 1.0.0-RC2
Posted by Matthew de Detrich <ma...@aiven.io.INVALID>.
So.I just did a fresh checkout of
https://github.com/apache/incubator-pekko-management on
my x86_64 Linux box, set Java to version 1.8 and ran sbt ++2.13
reproducibleBuildsCheck
and it's still reporting the same problem. Furthermore the checksum's on my
linux box
perfectly match the ones on my Macbook M1 with both being different to what
is in ASF
staging repo.
I will look into it more.

I get clean matched results when I run the sbt-reproducible-builds commands:
https://github.com/apache/incubator-pekko-site/wiki/Pekko-Release-Process#verifying-the-binary-build
Are you sure that you have the code at the 1.0.0-RC2 tag point and
that you are running a clean build?

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Pekko(incubating) Management 1.0.0-RC2

So jardiff isn't reporting any differences but diffoscope does, see
https://gist.github.com/mdedetrich/172c369af2a4ac39e2b21f3ad8e8daf6 . The
diff appears to be coming from files such as NOTICE and LICENSE, so I think
that the issue is that maybe you published from the latest main rather than
the tag when there was a difference in these files? Here is also the
relevant output of sbt-reproducible-diff for Scala 2.13
https://gist.github.com/mdedetrich/08e02b787d4f712d104fba1d47252864
Locally I am checking from git tag c1bab5a116b7f4c654f9d7ae3886a344e0f3771e

I am getting a mismatch in jvm binary jars with sbt-reproducible-builds so
I will block the release until I confirm its either an issue on my end or
the binaries are fixed
