New To WS, Axis, SOAP - Basic Question

Greetings,

New to web services, Axis, SOAP.

I have an applet/servlet-based system running in Tomcat. I would like to 
modify it to accept secure information (XML or serialized object) from a 
remote machine, then to invoke the applet on the calling machine. I'd 
like the process to be completely programmatic, hands-off, and agnostic 
WRT the software running on the calling system; mine is all-Java but I 
want to handle requests from any machine. Is this an appropriate use of 
this technology? If so, are there any informative examples about?
