XMLBeans Survey Results

XMLBeans Survey Results

1) How did you hear about XMLBeans?

conference

internet articles or web logs

friend or coworker

other (please specify)

Saw it on the Apache XML list

Links from other related projects, Google.

through using beehive

Conclusion: Internet articles count a lot in making it visible.

2) What version of XMLBeans are you using?

v1.0.3

v1.0.4

v1.0.4-jdk13

v2.0.0-beta1

v2.0.0

XMLBeans bundled with other product (please specify)

latest SVN snapshot

Conclusion: Even if v1.0.4 counts for 40% the majority of the users have
some form of v2 35% + 15% + 1% = 51%.

3) Which of the following do you find most valuable in your version of
XMLBeans?

(use numbers: 1 most valuable to 9 least valuable)

strongly typed interfaces (the Java binding)

100% XMLSchema support

full XML info set access (through DOM and XmlCursor)

XPath and XQuery support

XMLSchema validation coverage

ease of use

schema type system API

all the above in one integrated package

other (please specify)

Ability to process well formed but invalid and marginally malformed docs

does not create a lot of other dependencies

Conclusion: As expected strongly typed interfaces are very valuable for
our users, but I didn't expected to see 100% Schema on the first place.
Ease of use, one integrated package and xpath/xquery follow for
providing value in XMLBeans.

4) From your point of view, what should be the focus in XMLBeans v3?

(use numbers: 1 - most valuable to 7 - least valuable)

performance

smaller memory footprint

SAAJ support

JAXB2 support

SDO support

support of large XML messages through streaming

other (please specify)

no focus for V3 but a sub-project :

eclipse plugin to help with XmlBeans configuration (your own),

xsd editing (/Oxygen-like, partnership with free tools?),

xml editing (/Oxygen-like, wrapping existing sample generation tools).

still not a focus, but some improvement :

more documentation about Xmlbeans configuration, less dependence to bea
for documentation (I often find my answer on their site).

Dom Layer 3

documentation and samples

a C++/C# version would be good. - There is work being done to start
xmlbeanscxx project in the incubator.

Better support for use of <any> elements

Support methods for key-keyref declarations

Stronger implementation Xpath and XQuery

Ease of use: More convienience methods in the generated interfaces.

more programmer options: force printing of XML header, force use of
CDATA on an element

configurable CDATA handling

configurable CDATA handling

configurable CDATA handling

Integration with eXist DB It will be nice if I could query DB with
XQuery and get result as XMLBeans. If changes in XMLBeans will be
automatically stored in DB would be brilliant. Probably such integration
is more 'TODO' for eXist team not for you, but... or maybe I should look
at it :)

more Aspect Oriented stuff: I know some are there, and it is very
interesting direction

some way to make XMLBean to implement other interface (not one made from
Schema), and easy mapping between methods. At a moment I have normal
Java Interface and I make implementation of it with XMLBean instance.
Interface mostly hides XMLBeans specific methods, sometimes setX()
methods, and sometimes add some extra functionality. It will be nice to
make this process more automatic, but I have no idea how. Maybe Aspeccts
again.

Conclusion: JAXB2 seems to be wanted a little more compared with SDO and
SAAJ, probably because of the Sun spec resonance. Very interesting are
the suggestions we got: support for configurable CDATA is on top, also
following support for any and key-keyref (notice there are no id-idref
requests). I was expecting Hibernate integration to come up, but it
didn't.

The focus for v3 is clear: Performance, as expected, is the first thing
users want, followed by smaller memory footprint. But it is impressive
how many users want support for large XML messages through streaming.

Thanks a lot to all participants!

Thanks for posting the results to the list.

However, you dropped my 'other' comments about patching XmlBeans so it
works inside of applets and unsigned Java Web Start applications.
I already submitted the patch (twice). Nudge...
