Drill has a {{typeof()}} function that returns the data type (but not mode) of a column. It was discussed on the dev list recently. However, a search of the Drill web site, and a scan by hand, failed to turn up documentation about the function.

As a general suggestion, would be great to have an alphabetical list of all functions so we don't have to hunt all over the site to find which functions are available.
