This behaviour sounds like the JMX files might not be complete test-plans. But 
I could be wrong.

By the way, the Open menu command currently merges in the new file; it does not 
clear the existing contents first.

Please can you post a simple example JMX file (as an attachment to this bug) so 
we can try and investigate further?
