[Issue 126417] New: 4.1.1 "1" looks same as "l"

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126417

          Issue ID: 126417
        Issue Type: DEFECT
           Summary: 4.1.1 "1" looks same as "l"
           Product: Writer
           Version: 4.1.0
          Hardware: Mac
                OS: Mac OSX, 10.10
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P5
         Component: formatting
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: marktremills@gmail.com

Hi!
I'm using a refurnished 2012 Macbook Air which I bought as such in 2013,
OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 (all updates).

I downloaded the 4.1.1 Apache OpenOffice this morning.

The number 1 (one) should look different than the letter l (el).

The number 1 (one) looks nearly the same as the small letter l (el) which
according to my screen appears to be doing the same thing here. However, the
"Summary" in the above section shows the number 1 and letter el as they should
be.

When I changed the default to Header 1 the number 1 looked different for one
line, but then for the lines afterwards all the small l's (els) looked like the
number l (one) again.

Basically, the number 1 has a horizontal line on the bottom but the letter l
should not have a horizontal line on the bottom or even a hook at the top of
the letter.

The number 1 and letter l (el) look normal everywhere else including in my text
edit, in my Mac "Pages," Gmail and other social networking sites.

Thank you!

Thank you for replying.

The error is in the font "Times New Roman." The number one looks like an el.
The letter el should look like a straight vertical line.
Everything else in the font is printed correctly.

This is the font that is known to me to be best on the eyes for reading and
writing so I only use it (excluding special effects).

Only that one letter needs to be replaced in the code.

Thanks

Another question is, why you get the combination 1l at all. If l is the measure
unit for liter, then you should not use 1l but 1ℓ. The character ℓ has been
introduced in Unicode to make the unit easily distinguishable from the number.

Well.. thanks for your comments.
Obviously you can't repair the issue or perhaps you don't understand that
having a letter el in the English language is not a customization but a
normalization.

Mac (Apple) is an American company. They recognize that there is a difference
between the number one and the letter el and so they use different symbols for
each in Times New Roman.

Regina, I only typed 1l to show you that the letter el is shown as a larger
number one.
Unicode looks interesting but I don't have time to learn how to use it for just
one letter.
(Currently I'm being taught to use L for litre)

Perhaps I will check out the forum when my life isn't sufficiently challenging.
Perhaps they won't try to teach me how to code to correct the error or a
second issue that's there too.

I'll try somewhere else, thank you.

It's important to me to easily be able to see the difference between 1 and l
(el)

example: 1l1 this currently reads: one el one.

It is like Regine said already: It's up to you to choose the font you want to
see. So, when you are happy with "Times New Roman" but a single character
cannot be recognized easily, then you have to find an own solution - e.g.,
choosing another font that is better for this character or for all in general.

Fonts are coming from the system and OpenOffice is just using them. It's not
possible to change and customized them. So, it's not a problem that OpenOffice
or we as project can help you with.

You can also ask for help on the users forum. Maybe others had a similar
problem and could tell what to do:

It is up to you, to use a font, which makes it easy to distinguish characters
and numbers. Apache OpenOffice can use the fonts, which are available on you
system. To set the fonts for a document, select the desired font in the
paragraph styles. The most important styles are "Default" and "Heading" in this
case.
If you need help to set fonts in AOO, please ask in a forum or mailing list

Times New Roman don't come with AOO. Simply use another application and format
the text with Times New Roman as in Apache OpenOffice. Make a screenshot and
show us the difference why you mean it is an AOO issue.
