Shall we waste twelve more years promoting Free office suites instead of...

Twelve (TWELVE!!!) years ago I asked OpenOffice users “Are you
advocating OO correctly”. Six years ago I said the same things in a
different format. A couple of weeks ago, I came across a perfect proof
that that kind of advocay IS right, but so far has been never
practiced enough.

Let us take Fioretti’s advice. Lets focus on using one good product. Let us standardize on formats that are supported as native to the software such as Appache OpenOffice.

I have found that the OpenOffice text application does a much more dependable job than Microsoft’s Word.

I have used and own Nisus Pro - it is a multilingual word processor - as are almost all applications on
my MacBook Pro and previous Apple products since 1984.

I was often saving the files in rtf format, but now often use odt.

I have been using FileMaker Pro since 1984 as well. I have tried the OpenOffice system,
but it doesn’t come close to FMPro 12.

I have tried a few other applications in OpenOffice, they are OK.
But could become fantastic with our support.

Prominently within that article is an advertisement (from Google add services) to download OO from usDOTcom which we know is a fraud. :-(

There is no lack of effort as you seem to conclude from some , what?,
critical analysis of data. Micrsosoft has an iso standard file
format..can't use that as a data point.

Folks involved are doing a geat job..thanks, AOO devs and users.

LO broke backwards compatability for archived documents, they did this
to be 'more' compatable with Microsoft, its what the reality of the
user base dictated, and I am sure they did not make this decision
lightly. AOO document fidelity is perfect here since 2002..coool.

In fact, I did NOT say that OO the *software* should not support .docx

I said that OO users and advocates should demand much, much more than
they have been doing, that files are exchanged in open formats.

There is a big difference. And the fact that it has been ignored is
why things stand now as they stand, and all the effort put into
compatibility with .docx still doesn't spare people from being told
"to work with certain customers, use MS Office"

It's a complex issue. OpenOffice does advocate and promote ODF, project
members have prominent roles in the ODF standard maintenance and the
product shows a warning when users save in a non-ODF format. Still, in
our user survey (for existing OpenOffice users) for version 4.x the top
priority of our users was a better compatibility with the native formats
of Microsoft Office. So, as things stand now, we'll have to do both. Of
course this can be discussed forever, and this doesn't mean that users
shouldn't complain when a document is only available in .DOC format...
but OpenOffice as a project has to do both, as requested by its own users.

Trademarks are dealt with in private due to the sensitive nature of the
topic, but I think I can say that Apache already approached Google to
prevent misuse of trademarks. For more about trademarks see

The real solution for this is that the openoffice product reports that
website as a whole to google for abuse, false advertising or whatever
it is.

Thanks for telling me. The adsense page says that, in order to block
ads (from my website ONLY, hence the paragraph above!) , I have to

Enter the [exact!]display URL shown on the ad or the destination
URL to block new and existing ads. To learn how to find the URL
or format the URL to block ads from the right pages

please tell me the exact URL and I'll block it.
