Wellformed valid html or xsl from jsp using Struts tags

Hi 
In a jsp i had written code as 
 
<html:submit property="method" styleClass="btnitem">
 <bean:message key="global.button.OK"/>
 </html:submit>
 
why is the output 
 
<input type-"submit"> which isnt well formed 
 
how do i get it to output 
 
<input type-"submit" /> or <input type-"submit" ></input>

Blank<input type="submit"> is well formed in html 4.0

Struts tags at least on version 1.1, writes html 4.0 standar code.
