+
Administering the Apache Geronimo Server

+
Covered in this section are the most common, every day, server related administrative tasks you may deal with. Subsequent sections will focus on configuring services, managing applications and configuring security.

+
+
Changing the Web container (Jetty or Tomcat)

+
When you download and build Apache Geronimo from source code (from svn) you would get a directory structure similar to this one:

+
+

+
applications

+
assemblies

+
configs

+
docs_nopublish

+
etc

+
modules

+
openejb

+
plugins

+
sandbox

+
xdocs

+

+
+
+
If you look under the assemblies directory you will find the following subdirectories:

+
+

+
j2ee-installer

+
j2ee-jetty-server

+
j2ee-tomcat-server

+

+
+
+
We will focus on the last two directories that, as you may expect, contain self-contained images of Apache Geronimo configured to use either of these two Web containers.

+
+
Depending on whether you want to use Jetty or Tomcat you will change to the respective directory (j2ee-jetty-server or j2ee-tomcat-server), the internal subdirectory structure will be the same. Once in the Web container specific directory, change directory once again to target/geronimo-1.0. This directory is your self-contained, totally complete, Apache Geronimo server. You may copy this directory to a different location. This directory is being referenced as <geronimo_home> throughout these series of articles.

+
+
So, selecting the Web container is no longer a matter of changing configuration files but rather choosing a directory structure for the different assemblies. Within this structure you will find a /bin directory, the next section explains the commands located in this directory and how to start and stop the server.

+
+

+
+
Starting and stopping the server

+
There are two command line ways to start the server. From a command line window or terminal change directory to <geronimo_home>/bin. From there you can either type:

+
+
java -jar server.jar

+
+
or simply

+
+
startup

+
+
Refer to the Startup section for all the options for this command.

+
+
To stop the server you will have to open a new command line window or terminal, change directory to <geronimo_home>/bin and run the shutdown command. You will be prompted for username and password. Refer to the Shutdown section for all the options for this command.

+
+
If the server is already running you have the option of using the Geronimo Administration Console to shutdown the server remotely. With the server up and running open a Web browser and point to the following URL to access the console:

+
+
http://localhost:8080/console

+
+
Log in to the Geronimo Administration Console and click on Shutdown on the Console Navigation panel on the left.

+
+

+
+
When you click on the Shutdown button in the Server Manager portlet, you will be prompted one more time to confirm the server shutdown. Click OK to confirm and shutdown the server. No need to mention that the connection from the Administration Console will be lost and you will need to restart the server from a terminal or command line window.

+
+

+
+
Configure log level

+
As explained in the Geronimo Administration Console section, the Administration Console provides four portlets for configuring and viewing the server's logs, these portlets are the Log Manager, Server Log Viewer, Derby Log Viewer and Web Access Log Viewer.

+
+

+
+
Log Manager

+
The Log Manager portlet options are illustrated in the following figure. From this portlet you can specify the location of the log configuration file. By default this value is set to var/log/server-log4j.properties.

+
+

+
+
Other value you can modify in from this portlet is the Refresh Period. This value tells Geronimo how often (in seconds) it should check for any changes to the configuration file. By default this value is set to 60 seconds.

+
+
From this portlet you can also change the Log Level. By default this value is set to INFO, the possible values you can choose from are All, DEBUG, INFO, WARN, ERROR, FATAL, TRACE and OFF.

+
+

+
+
Server Log Viewer

+
The Server Log Viewer portlet options are illustrated in the following figure. From this portlet you can view the Geronimo server logs as well as set filters for refining the results displayed.

+
+
!ServerLogViewer.jpg!

+
+
The Reset link on the upper left corner will reset any filtering criteria you may have specified to the Geronimo Administration Console's defaults and will display the last 10 lines (if any) of the current Geronimo server log.

+
+
The Filter Results: area will let you specify different filtering criteria to further narrowing down your search. The File pull-down menu allows you to select the log file to view. The logs listed in this pull-down menu are ruled by the Configuration File (server-log4j.properties by default) specified in the Log Manager portlet. The number of log files to choose from the File pull-down menu will depend on the number of log files defined in the server-log4j.properties configuration file.

+
+
Lines ..to.. lets you specify a range of line of log to analyze. Max Results limits the number of lines to be displayed. Level displays only those errors occurred for that Log Level. Containing text lets you enter a specific string to search through the server log. With Exceptions by clicking this checkbox will be displayed not just the error but also the exception, the stack trace display will be limited to the number lines set by the Max Results value.

+
+

+
+
Derby Log Viewer

+
The Derby Log viewer portlet options are illustrated in the following figure. From this portlet you can view the Derby server logs as well as set filters for refining the results displayed.

+
+

+
+
The Reset link on the upper left corner will reset any filtering criteria you may have specified to the Geronimo Administration Console's defaults and will display the last 10 lines (if any) of the current Derby server log.

+
+
Similar to the Server Log Viewer portlet, the Filter Results: area will let you specify different filtering criteria to further narrowing down your search. Lines ..to.. lets you specify a range of line of log to analyze. Max Results limits the number of lines to be displayed and Containing text lets you enter a specific string to search through the server log.

+
+

+
+
Web Access Log Viewer

+
The Web Access Log Viewer portlet options are illustrated in the following figure. From this portlet you can view the Web server logs as well as set filters for refining the results displayed.

+
+

+
+
The Reset link on the upper left corner will reset any filtering criteria you may have specified to the Geronimo Administration Console's defaults. In contrast with the other portlets, the Web Access Log Viewer will display all the lines in the log, it will just be limited by your Web browser display capabilities.

+
+
The Filter Results: area will let you specify different filtering criteria to further narrowing down your search. For the Web Access Log Viewer this area is divided in three main groups, Date, Identity and Requests.

+
+

+
Date:
+Lets you specify a date range. If the Ignore Dates checkbox is selected, filtering will not be done using the date. All log lines that match the other filtering criteria will be displayed regardless of the date.

+

+
+
+

+
Identity:
+Lets you specify Remote Address (i.e. 192.168.0.1) and Authenticated User (i.e. system).

+

+
+
+

+
Request:
+Lets you specify the Request Method from and the Requested URI. You can select the Requested Method from a drop-down menu, the possible values are ANY, POST and GET. To filter by Requested URI just enter a URI, for example http://localhost:8080/console/login.jsp.

+

+
+
+

+
+
Performance monitoring

+
For monitoring the Web server performance the Web Server Manager portlet is available by selecting Web Server on the Console Navigation on the left hand side. By default this portlet is not enabled, click on the enable button to start collecting statistics.

+
+

+
+
Once enable you will start collecting information on the number of requests, concurrent connections, requests duration, etc. The following figure illustrates all the values being collected.

+
+

+
+
The three links at the bottom let you refresh the current statistics, disable the portlet and stopping the collection of new data and reset the data collected.

+
+
<colgroup><col width='24'><col></colgroup>

Note that any request from you via the Geronimo Administration Console (for example refreshing statistics) will be reflected in this collection.

+
Adding new listeners for the Web containers

+
For configuring new listeners (HTTP, HTTPS and AJP) to the Web container in use (either Jetty or Tomcat) the Network Listener portlet is available by selecting Web Server on the Console Navigation on the left hand side. From this portlet you can add new listeners as well as change the status (stop, start, delete) of the existing connectors.

+
+

+
+
The processes described next are the same for both Jetty and Tomcat Web containers.

+
The Apache Software Foundation has initiated a project to develop an open-source, Apache-licensed, implementation of the J2EE specification. In addition, the project is committed to certifying the implementation as J2EE compliant. This is an ambitious goal and will present a formidable challenge for the people involved, given the wide range of technologies covered by the specification.

+
+
Apache Geronimo builds upon the many Java projects at the Apache Software Foundation. In addition, the project is bringing together members of the ActiveMQ, Castor, MX4J, OpenEJB and ServiceMix communities. We would like to extend an open invitation to everyone involved in the J2EE space, both commercial entities and talented individuals, to join the community and build a world-class J2EE implementation.

+
+
The Apache Software Foundation is in a unique position to build a J2EE compliant platform. Our non-profit, charity status, and our relationship with Sun Microsystems, provides the foundation with access to the J2EE TCKs, making it possible to achieve certification. In addition, our flexible and unrestrictive licensing makes it possible for a wide variety of participants to assist in the development of Apache Geronimo, and to build their own solutions upon the platform.

+
+
On May 26, 2004, the board of the Apache Software Foundation approved the graduation of the Apache Geronimo project from within the Incubator to its own Top Level project.

+
+
GBeans overview

+
For a start, almost everything in Apache Geronimo is a Geronimo Bean or more friendly GBean. Apache Geronimo is built on a lightweight kernel that provides central integration. The purpose of this kernel is to manage these GBeans lifecycle and it's dependencies.

+
+
GBeans are the building blocks that Apache Geronimo is made of. As previously stated, almost everything in Geronimo is a GBean, that is containers, applications, connectors, etc, so one GBean can certainly aggregate other GBeans, specially large ones. A Geronimo server instance is basically a collection of GBeans so the Geronimo kernel would essentially be a GBean container.

+
+
GBeans can hold states, define dependencies (internal and external) and react to certain life cycle events. This capability can be used to store GBean's current state and recover that state at a later time. GBeans can also be managed through a management interface (command line or Geronimo Console), enabling them to be started, stopped and edited on the fly.

+
+
GBeans may register interest on the status of other GBeans with particular characteristics. When a GBean with those characteristics is started, a reference to that GBean is injected into the GBean that registered interest. This process is known as dependency injection and makes GBeans a powerful framework for building loosely coupled systems.

+
+
In short, GBeans framework provides:

+

+
Inversion of Control (IoC) components style model.

+
Logical identity coupled to a classification model.

+
Managed attributes, intended for configuration/instrumentation.

+
Persistent attributes, properties stored when offline.

+
Logical operations that can be remapped.

+
References to and dependencies on other GBeans.

+
Lifecycle model.

+

+
+
+
The following figure illustrates the GBeans lifecycle.
+
+
J2EE has it's own model for authorization. Authorization is done against an abstract notion of a role. Authorization policy is written in the deployment descriptor with the role name, resources and appropriate actions. Roles must be mapped to principals at deployment time.

+
+
We want to map roles to domain or realm principals (produced by wrapping Security Realms). This is not supported in Geronimo M5 or earlier milestones. In those early releases you can only map j2EE roles to principals that are not explicitly linked to the Login Domain and Security Realm.

+
+
Since domain and realm principals are wrapping Principals, @class attribute that you must specify for either of them must be the name of the class that implements java.security.Principal interface.

+

+
class = org.apache.geronimo.security.realm.providers.LDAPLoginModule
+Options:

+

+
initialContextFactory - the class name of the initial context factory. Usually com.sun.jndi.ldap.LdapCtxFactory.

+
connectionURL - LDAP connection URL, such as ldap://localhost:1389 . Note that usual LDAP port is 389.

+
connectionUsername - this is the DN used by the login module itself for authentication to the directory server.

+
connectionPassword - this is credential (password) that is used by the login module to authenticate itself to the directory server

+
connectionProtocol - security protocol to use. This value is determined by the service provider. An example would be SSL.

+
authentication - security level to use. Its value is one of the following strings: "none", "simple", "strong". If this property is unspecified, the behavior is determined by the service provider.

+
userBase - the base DN for the user search.

+
userSearchMatching - filter specification how to search for the user object. RFC 2254 filters are allowed. In addition you can pass parameter to the search filter instead of the literal value. For example: this is RFC 2254 filter spec: (cn=Babs Jensen). If you want to parameterize the value of the CN attribute type, specify (cn = {0}). This integer refers to the parameter number. Parameter value is the user name. This query must return exactly one object.

+
userSearchSubtree - Defines directory search scope for the user. If set to true, directory search scope is SUBTREE, if set to false, directory search scope is ONE-LEVEL.

+
roleBase - the base DN for the group membership search.

+
roleName - LDAP attribute type that identifies group name attribute in the object returned from the group membership query. Note that group membership query is defined by the roleSearchMatching parameter. Often group name parameter is cn.

+
roleSearchMatching - filter specification how to search for the role object. RFC 2254 filters are allowed. In addition you can pass parameter to the search filter instead of the literal value. For example: (uniqueMember = {0}). This integer refers to the parameter number. This parameter is the DN of the authenticated user. Note that if role membership for the user is defined in the member-of-like attribute (see userRoleName parameter) you may not need to search for group membership with the query.

+
roleSearchSubtree - Defines directory search scope for the role. If set to true, directory search scope is SUBTREE, if set to false, directory search scope is ONE-LEVEL.

+
userRoleName - LDAP attribute type for the user group membership. Different LDAP schemas represent user group membership in different ways. Examples are: memberOf, isMemberOf, member, etc. Values of these attributes are identifiers of groups that a user is a member of. For example, if you have: memberOf: cn=admin,ou=groups,dc=foo, specify memberOf as the value for the userRoleName attribute. Be aware of the relationship between this parameter and group membership query. Sometimes (often) they will return the same data.
