FYI, I managed to get cqlsh working by downloading http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/cassandra/trunk/pylib/setup.py, and and cqlshlib from http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/cassandra/trunk/pylib/cqlshlib/, and then running python install setup.py.
Just not sure why it's not installed by default and why I had to install the cqlshlib manually.
