The provenance repository bundle currently uses lucene version 4.10.4[1], which is 4 years old [2].  The current version is 8.0.  We have been seeing JVM crashes that appear similar to issues reported in tickets like LUCENE-7183 / LUCENE-7409.  While the exact root cause of the nifi issue has not been determined, updating lucene would seem to be a reasonable step in any case.
