[jira] Created: (UIMA-204) Plugin builds have zip files with extra top level directories

Plugin builds have zip files with extra top level directories
-------------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: UIMA-204
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/UIMA-204
             Project: UIMA
          Issue Type: Bug
          Components: Build, Packaging and Test
    Affects Versions: 2.1
            Reporter: Marshall Schor
         Assigned To: Adam Lally
            Priority: Minor

If you unzip the target plugin zip file, you get something which looks like a plugin folder. But it actually contains another folder of exactly the same name which is the real plugin folder. This makes the normal action of unzipping the zip file and installing the resulting folder into the Eclipse plugin directory not work.

Of course, this may go away if we don't use zip packaging at all for plugins... (see UIMA-203)

[jira] Resolved: (UIMA-204) Plugin builds have zip files with extra top level directories

Adam Lally resolved UIMA-204.
-----------------------------

    Resolution: Cannot Reproduce

I checked, and the plugin zips that I have only contain one top-level folder. The folder has the same name as the zip file itself, but that is not a problem.

What tool are you using to unzip? If you use the Windows "compressed folder" support, when you open the zip it displays something that "looks like" a folder, but it isn't. And if you extract the files, it will suggest by default to create a new folder with the same name as the zip (which would result in nested folders as you report), but this is overridable. Most real zip utilities don't have these properties.

Also, in the final mvn assembly:assembly step these zips are unzipped into the eclipsePlugins directory of the final UIMA distribution, anyway.

Try Total Commander (http://www.ghisler.com/index.htm). It looks a bit
old-fashioned, but doesn't have its equal for file compression and
decompression (on Windows). I use it as an explorer replacement.

WinZip behaves the same. What I do is (a) doubleclick the zip file - it runs the unzipper, and yes, it creates a new dir of the same name in the current dir. Then (b) I drag/drop the dir into the Eclipse plugin folder. Of course, this fails. What I need to do is open the generated dir, find the same dir there, and drag/drop that.

You make good points though, so I'll try and remember to do this in the future :-)

In fact, I take back what I said about the "compressed folder" support, it is not quite accurate. It's true that when you click "Extract all Files" it suggests that you unzip into a directory with the same name as the zip file, *in the same location as the zip file itself*. But that's not what I want, so I click "Browse" and select my eclipse\plugins directory and click "Next". This does NOT cause an extra nested directory. (So really, it's only the default suggestion that has that name, and I always want to override the default anyway.) It would be very annoying to me if browsing to the eclipse\plugins dir did not create the appropritely named directory underneath.

Does WinZip behave differently (i.e., you browse to a directory, and it wants to create yet another directory under there)? If so, I think that's a poor design on their part.

The top-level directory seems to be the norm. In fact our entire UIMA distribution also has a top-level directory (as suggested by Thilo) named "apache-uima".

hmmm. I'm using the free WinZip unzipper: ZIP Reader by PKWARE (TM) - Version 8.00.0018

The default for using Windows "compressed folder" support , and the default for using the WinZip unzipper both result in nested top level folders. It is true that for WinZip, this could be overridden. But that's extra work every time the utility is run. Why not have the "default" just work? Do you need this top-level folder in the Zip itself?
