We're seeing occasional NullPointerExceptions coming out of ContextHelper.getInitialContextUsingBuilder at the line, 
  factory = builder.createInitialContextFactory(environment);

This implies that builder can sometimes end up null. This might be because context or ref were somehow null, or possibly because context and ref were valid but the OSGi service registry somehow still returned null from  Utils.getServicePrivileged(). Adding some small, non-intrusive extra diagnostics.
