Issue 121312 -- slow/odd opening of database

Thanks Rory --

I asked about this particular issue here because I didn't really know how
this issue should be closed. We currently recommend java ver 7.  It's VERY
odd to me that in this case, ver 6 seemd to work and now 8 seems to work
but NOT ver 7. I imagine this can be isolated to a particular reason, and
if so, we should document it in the Release Notes or something.

On the other hand, we could use more testing on the supplied DB for various
Java versions and OS environments as well.
