I changed the subject, but I obviously disagree. If done correctly this should work without problems.  That said, I don't care how the changes get back into the 4.0 branch, just that they do and that they work.

> The merge doesn't apply cleanly, so I decided to attempt a rebase to see where things start going off the tracks.  When rebasing master on top of 4.0.x, it turns out that the refactor of PluginManager that was done on master is why.  This needs to be fixed and documented.
