gcc 2.96 was used by RedHat but was never really supported by the gcc team (see
http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-2.96.html ). THere are some bugs, and Xalan hits them
when it tries to build.
You will need to download either a 3.2x version of gcc or move back to 2.95.4
