Extension function that serializes a Result Tree Fragment

I'm trying to write an extenstion function to Xalan 1.0.1, which would take
in a Result Tree Fragment, serialize it using the same output settings as
the stylesheet itself and then return the character count of the serialized
document. I'm having trouble reusing the XSLTEngineImpl (for staters :).
Might anyone have example code, since the extension examples available don't
use RTFs and the Redirect extension is an element, not fucntion.
