Initial Code Dump

Hi all,

lets figure out what must be done to import
the initial code over from sourceforge.

The mentor guide says:
"For contributions composed of patches from individual contributors,
it is safe to import the code once the major contributors (by volume) have
completed ICLAs or SGAs."

Does that mean that we can import the code to svn with
the following steps:

1. Create Jira issues for OpenNLP and Maxent
2. Tag OpenNLP and Maxent code over at sourceforge
3. Attach the source code to the issues
4. Import the source code into the new repo
5. Perform code cleanup (all files already contain the license header)

Can step 4. be completed before Tom Morton has a iCLA on file ?

Should we import CVS history since 1.5.0 from sourceforge or not ?

Gann is definitely a major contributor (he and I shared equally in creating
the initial code base). Eric made some changes, but less extensive. I'd
still like him to be on file.

If someone can tell me exactly what I need to tell them so they can complete
the necessary forms, I'll contact Gann and Eric.

FWIW, there is no gray area for Tom's contribution: he carried the project
almost single handedly for many years!

I do not know exactly who contributed how much in the past.
It seems that this is the list of major contributors:
Tom Morton
Jason Baldridge (CLA on file)
Jörn Kottmann (CLA on file)
Gann Bierner
Eric Friedman

Of three people who have no CLAs at least Tom contributed
a major amount. Its not known to me how much the other two
contributed, but it seems to be major also.

Tom will sign the CLA. Should we contact the other two,
to sign a CLA too? Or is a SGA more suitable?

Ok, until we know exactly when we can import, it seems
safe to perform the first three steps, right ?

1. Create Jira issues for OpenNLP and Maxent
2. Tag OpenNLP and Maxent code over at sourceforge
3. Attach the source code to the issues

Thanks,
Jörn

As I understand the rules, we have some flexibility in timing the
import versus the CLAs. However, only you folks know who is 'major'.
If Tom is in a gray area of major-ness, go ahead. If he's really
responsible for a significant wad of code, I suppose that you might
want to wait on him.

I want to emphasize that I've never been through this process as a
Mentor before, so in doubt you or I could send a message to
general@incubator asking for guidance.

Thanks for the advice, they just commented on the issue and
will import it into a test repo first. When everything goes fine,
it will be imported into our new repo.

Jörn,

The infra group, for good reason, is sensitive about their status as
overloaded volunteers. They particularly ask for patience on these
imports. Honestly, if anyone is going to ping them, it might as well
be you. infrastructure@ is the list that reaches them.

My advice is to give it another day or two first.

The ticket is open for a few days now, can we ping someone
to accelerate the import of the svn dumps ?

Here is the link to the issue:

Ok, then lets do it, I guess the process is that we open an
Infra ticket which instructs them what to pull and
where to place it, right ?

We could pull a little more history since our maven
restructuring over at SourceForge which
I believe was after the AL 2.0 switch (will check it).
Then we have all the important little bug fixes we did
for the 1.5.0 release also in the history.

Infra is perfectly happy to pull history, so why not? Once the grants
are on file, one of us mentor-types can create the ticket and we can
all stand back.

As per the mentor page, the history should probably land in an
'import' directory and svn cp should be used to set up the actual
ongoing development structure.

1. and 2. is done now, the tag is "asf_migration", I tagged opennlp-tools,
opennlp-uima and maxent.

What was the conclusion of the discussion about the history ?

It would be fine just to import the last release versions,
tag them, and then simply do a bulk update to the current
"asf_migration" version. Most changes since them have
been very minor additions, so not much history at all.

Anyway the history can be viewed in the sourceforge project.
It will be archived and be online for at least quite a while.
