[jira] [Created] (INFRA-3690) Some mirrors are mishandling the subversion directory tree

Some mirrors are mishandling the subversion directory tree
----------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: INFRA-3690
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-3690
             Project: Infrastructure
          Issue Type: Bug
      Security Level: public (Regular issues)
            Reporter: Sebb

Some mirrors seem to be mishandling the subversion directory tree.

For example, the subversion directory does not appear here:
http://mirror.lividpenguin.com/pub/apache/
http://mirrors.dedipower.com/ftp.apache.org/

The same applies to some FTP mirrors, for example

ftp://mirrors.dedipower.com/ftp.apache.org/

a directory listing shows:

drwxr-xr-x 3 0 0 4096 Jun 07 03:20 spamassassin
drwxr-xr-x 2 0 0 4096 May 02 2008 stdcxx
drwxr-xr-x 8 0 0 4096 Aug 19 2010 struts
drwx--S--- 2 0 0 4096 Jun 07 19:28 subversion
drwxr-xr-x 6 0 0 4096 Jan 11 01:15 synapse
drwxr-xr-x 2 0 0 8192 Mar 30 06:56 tapestry
drwxr-xr-x 4 0 0 4096 Apr 29 2010 tcl

which means the subversion folder is not accessible.

<danielsh> why check perms on anything, better, to head -c 1024 a random file and check that you get the correct result?

-----------------------------

Ran a check with CD for each TLD - this is very slow.

This showed that FTP sites only exhibit problems with the subversion directory, other directories seem to be OK.

It's not clear why HTTP mirrors have problems with other directories.

Sebb commented on INFRA-3690:
-----------------------------

I checked one or two sites against the master, and only found subversion to be missing; however that does not mean there aren't other missing directories.

I suppose the checking script could be extended to check that all the directories are present, and that they have sensible protections (in the FTP case).

BTW, the version of rsync on the EU mirror seems to be older than the version on the US mirror.

I've emailed the mirros@ list iniitally as all maintainers of mirrors should be subscribed. I pasted the above lists into the email and gave them 3 days to reply, before emailing maintainer addresses directly, giving a further 3 days before removing any non-compliant mirrors at that time.

Sebb commented on INFRA-3690:
-----------------------------

In the case of FTP mirrors, the subversion dirs sometimes have odd protection, preventing CD or other access, though they still appear in the listing.

It's simple to get a full directory listing and check both the names and permissions for all the subdirs at once.
Otherwise, it would mean accessing files in each subdir in turn - or at least trying to CD to each.

In the case of HTTP, the auto-generated directory index appears to skip inaccessible dirs, so no need to check permissions.

If every TLP were required to provide HEADER and README files, the script could do a bit more checking, but I wonder if that would add anything.
It would take far too long to check every file at every level, so we have to make some assumptions about possible failure modes, and adjust the checks accordingly.

I think it's enough for now to ensure that all the required directory names are present and accessible - I'll update the code aoon.
If necessary, the checks can be extended further later.

It looks like at least some of the "missing" subversion directories are present, but have the wrong permissions, so they don't show up in the index listing.
Also they are not directly accessible, for example:

http://apache.hippo.nl/subversion/ - 403 Forbidden.

-----------------------------

Turns out that it's not possible to use the FTP permissions to determine if the subdirectory is accessible, because some FTP servers run as the file owner , so only need owner access, and others run as other, so need world access.

Looks like CD is needed to check the permissions.
