Discussion on dev@ list showed up a test problem. 

The 'ref' object is reclaimed because all its methods are inlined and it cannot be enqueued. It is the responsibility of the test to ensure that the 'ref' object remains reachable.

The simplest way to fix the test is to declare 'ref' as static as it was suggested at discussion.
