[Tobago] Preparation for a 3.0.0 release
Hi, folks,
here is a short overview over the current situation:
After almost 3 years of development, we are now quite ready to build a
final Tobago 3 release. The world (especially the browsers) have changed
since the start of Tobago 1. CSS3 and HTML5 are much more powerful.
Most important changes of Tobago 3 are:
* LayoutManager moved from Server to CSS (or JS in limited cases)
* Themes using CSS lib Bootstrap [1]
* Responsiveness
* Simplify many things with current technology
* Easier to integrate Tobago in other projects
* Easier to integrate Libs in Tobago
* In general: do less magic, but more standard
The complete list you find of course in the Jira [2].
Currently we have only the standard theme. The other themes have only
some colors changed, but are not fascinating. So I tent to exclude the
themes (scarborough, speyside, richmond, charlotteville) from the release.
By the way: Has anyone developed a nice Bootstrap 4 theme which can be
donated to Tobago? It would be nice to have a read different theme.
Also some examples are no longer in active development (test,
addressbook). Some of its content should be migrated to the "demo",
before removing them, but this may be done later. We should them also
exclude from the release.
At the end of this week I would like to make a first beta, and one week
later I expect the final 3.0.0.
Comments welcome!
Regards,
Udo

Hi,
it's like a chicken egg problem until we make a release we don't get to
much user feedback. Since we have made 7 alphas I would say we should go
for the next stage.
If Udo is the release manager he can decide if it's ready or not (He is
doing all the work). From my technical point, all parts i would like to see
are touched.
Please go for a release. I don't see any problems to release it if there
are know limitations because I would like to get better and more feedback.
Regards
Bernd

Hi,
yes, great work so far,
but in my opinion we are not in a state to do a release, as i discussed
whit Udo offlist.
The new layout, at least the flexLayout, is not working as expected. To fix
this is not a Feature request, but a bug fixing.
Many other bugs just filed by Henning.

Volker

Hi Udo,
I think the documentation (new 3.0/ migration guide) needs some update. Are
you already working on this?
In my view we should publish a version along with the release where TODOs
are resolved.
Cheers

Hi, folks,
I plan to build the 3.0.0 of Tobago Monday (tomorrow) evening (GMT).
Are there blocking problems with the release candidate?

Udo

Are there blocking problems with the release candidate?

On the other side, there currently are too few differences between the themes...
The reason behind it is, that I don't like technical effort to manage different maven profiles for the release. But that isn't a good reason...
So, I'll leave the Speyside theme to show the theme handling and building and hide the others. When there is a progress on the other themes the might come back to be part of a release.

Hi,
Themes:
I would like to keep the themes inside the release and mark them as
"preliminary". This is easier to support, so it makes less work and it
may show the development.
I'll add some issues (one per theme) to track the progress in the themes.
Same with the examples "test" and "addressbook".

Udo

Hi Udo,
thanks for the great work.
Regarding themes: I would drop scarborough, richmond, charlotteville but
leave speyside. As far as I remember this was the most used (old standard
theme). Moreover the current migration guide doesn't mention how to migrate
existing custom themes. This needs to be added.
Btw: We should prepare an article for JSFCentral.com along with the 3.0
release. Kito offered to publish it earlier this year.
Regards
Dennis
