Releasing an 8.1.0 release right now wouldn't do anything about this, because nothing has been done yet to address this.
One problem is that upgrading to a new major version of gradle might be a breaking change, which we can't do until cordova-android@9.0.0. A larger problem is that currently nobody has time to look into this.
