Noel,
I would like to contribute with James in doing some activities. Part due to
my inexperience, part to my ignorance about James, if possible I would like
to be introduced gently.
Could you address me to some 'very light' tasks which need to be done, so
that I can have a look at these?
Regards,
Marco

NNTP Moderation (was: Contributing)

Not knowing your skill set makes that a somewhat difficult proposition.
There are quite a few useful things to do with James.
One that would be useful is to change NNTP to allow moderated newsgroups.
This is not actually too difficult, but it requires looking into how James
handles NNTP posting, and how newsgroup moderation works.
See: http://www.landfield.com/usenet/moderators/handbook/modtoc.html.
Changes would include:
1. Change NNTPSpooler.process(File) to implement the moderation
mechanism. There are other places where this could be done,
but NNTPSpooler.process(File) seems to make the most sense to
me. If there is no Approved: header, the message has to be
mailed (MailServer.sendMail) to a moderation e-mail address
(configured for each newsgroup), otherwise it is posted as
normal.
2. Create ToNNTPRepository mailet, which takes a message and calls
NNTPRepository.createArticle(InputStream). This will re-spool
the article, allowing the NNTPSpooler complete the processing.
3. Although we could use AddHeader, it would probably be better if
we had an NNTPApprove mailet to perform the necessary header
changes, some of which are removals.
That's an overview of the changes necessary to implement NNTP moderation,
and from where I am sitting, they are surprisingly simple. Benefits of the
change will be that NNTP becomes more useful, and can also be used to
implement mailing list archives.
