You're apparently using Tapestry version 5.4. Since 5.4 is still in beta, the documentation isn't yet fully updated to match.

As the error message says, the Zone component's update parameter doesn't do anything in 5.4. The philosophy with 5.4 is to avoid a lot of built-in JavaScript effects in cases where it is easy for users to add their own. In this case you can listen for an update event, as mentioned in the Javadocs for Tapestry 5.4 (http://tapestry.apache.org/5.4/apidocs/index.html), "After the client-side content is updated, a client-side event is fired on the zone's element. The constant core/events:zone.didUpdate can be used to listen to the event." Hope this helps.
