Hi,
I have an idea which you might have already thought
about :

Before installing the new version, you backup the
folder "<james installation dir>/apps/james/var".
Ater installing, you overwrite the var folder with the
backup version. 

I don't really know what are all the implications of
the execution of the idea.

This is just a wild suggestion.

Please revert back.
