embperl and mod_gzip

Has anybody managed to successfully get embperl and mod_gzip to work together? I've managed to get mod_gzip to work on static html files but can't get it to work with Embperl files.

I've tried a couple of variants:

mod_gzip_item_include !perl-script
mod_gzip_item_include !.epl

But they don't seem to have any effect (judging by what Properties in IE says anyway).

Because the solaris mod_gzip.so couldn't be downloaded, I compiled it into my version of apache by putting it at the end of the Configuration file (I think this should be the right thing to do).

Any ideas appreciated.

Mike
