cocoon.xconf needs some help

There are two blocks like these

   <!--+
       |
       |
       |
       |
       |
       |                              ????
       |
       |
       |
       |
       |
       |
       +-->

in the cocoon.xconf file. They relate to Input/Output Modules.

I really don't know enough about those to write a meaningful 
introduction to the section.

Can you please help me out on this?
