using jcr mix:lifecycle in jackrabbit

hello,
has somebody experience using jcr lifecycle management in jackrabbit?

when a add the mixin lifecycle type to a node and call methodgetMixinNodeTypes() I get the following exception:
javax.jcr.ItemNotFoundException: f52a8133-7b00-4227-a032-3bd5e7649de1/{http://www.jcp.org/jcr/1.0}lifecyclePolicy
    at org.apache.jackrabbit.core.ItemManager.getItemData(ItemManager.java:384)

do have to define the possible transitions before using it?
where could I define such transitions?
