[users@httpd] Where is the Control Panel

I just installed Apache 1.3 on my Windows 2000 machine. Apache is running
in the background. How do I find the control panel so I can turn apache?

Thanks Mike for all your help. It works perfectly. I really do appreciate
your jumping in and helping me to solve this problem. Now all I have to do
is go to: START | PROGRAMS | START APACHE or START | PROGRAMS | STOP
APACHE . This is exactly what I wanted to be able to do!

Thanks again,
Alan

1. Delete the double-quote after the word start (above)

2. Insert a double-quote after the word Apache.exe (above)

You need double quotes around the location of the executable because it
has space in the directory name.

Remove the second set of quotes around Apache, or change them to
""Apache"".

Re: [users@httpd] Where is the Control Panel

Yes Mike this is what I need. However I could not figure out how to create
a shortcut to put into my menu. Let me re-iterate: I know how to create
shortcuts but when I try to enter this target ("C:\Program Files\Apache
Group\Apache\Apache.exe -w -n "Apache" -k start") into my shortcut it won't
accept it as a valid path. However, when I enter it using a DOS window I
can turn on and off the server. So I guess I need a short tutorial on how
to take "C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache\Apache.exe -w -n "Apache" -k
start" and turn it into a working shortcut.

I don't think 1.3 comes with the same doodads as Apache2. I think you
are looking for shortcuts to start, stop and restart Apache. If so, you
need three shortcut targets like this ...

   C:\apache\Apache\bin\Apache.exe -w -n "Apache" -k restart
(other two with start, stop instead of restart)

... with a Start in value like this ...

   C:\apache\Apache

Copy or move those three shortcuts to ...

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Apache HTTP Server

I installed for Win on an XP Home machine. I have Start|Programs|Apache
2.0.53|Control Apache Servers|Monitor Apache Servers.
This has put itself on the right side of the task bar during startup. I can
Stop|Start|Restart from the task bar. If this is what you meant then it is
there. It may have been an install option to add this on the task bar? Just
my 2 cents...

The console window is opened by executing the program CMD.COM. Use Start |
Run to execute this program, if you don't already have an icon for it upon
which you can click (but there should be an icon for it buried somewhere
(try Start | Accessories | Command Prompt or something like that).

Re: [users@httpd] Where is the Control Panel

I don't find Start | Programs | Apache Group | Stop Apache. What I find is
Start | Programs | Apache HTTP Server, but there is no Start or Stop
option. Apache is running because I go to http://localhost and I get the
standard default webpage. Evidently the install program did not add the
Start and Stop options to the windows Start Menu .

For those who have sent me email asking about "What Console Window" the
following documenation talks about it:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/windows.html#signal

This is my first attempt at Apache so please bear with me and please help
if at all possible.

Thanks,
Alan

Eh? What, exactly, do you mean by "control panel"?

If you're looking to start or stop Apache, try Start | Programs | Apache Group
| Start Apache (something like that) or Stop Apache. If you're looking to
configure Apache, hunt down the httpd.conf file and poke at that.

There is no control panel. You must edit a text file, httpd.conf, to
change the operating parameters of the server. Apache reads the file
when it is started to determine its operating parameters.
