[Bug 122726] New: Insert picture from file - previous image
retained
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122726
Bug ID: 122726
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Insert picture from file - previous image retained
Product: Impress
Version: AOO 3.4.1
Hardware: Other
OS: Linux64
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: formatting
Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
Reporter: sjoh079@gmail.com
CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org
To whom it may concern,
This bug is related to importing images into Impress. This report will be in
three parts, 1) The exact process I undertook, 2) the process that I thought
would occur, and 3) where I think the bug occurs.
1) I dragged and dropped an image from File Browser (in this case Nautilus). I
then resized and positioned the image, duplicated the slide, selected the image
on the new slide and went to change the displayed image using the
Insert->Picture->From File. After this I moved to a different slide, but upon
coming back to the slide where I had inserted the new image, the image had
reverted back to the original image that I had dragged into Impress (though the
sizing and positioning changes were still maintained).
2) I intended to take use of the (great) feature in Impress where one can
insert and image from file, adjust the size and position, then duplicate the
slide, click on the image in the new slide and insert a new image that will
take the same size and position of the previous image.
3) I think the 'bug' is due to the drag and drop process. I have tried to
replicate the bug using the Insert command for the original and duplicated
image, but the new, inserted image is retained and does not revert back to the
original, i.e. the process is normal when using only the Insert command.
Please contact me if further information is required.
Kind regards,
Stephen Johnston

--- Comment #9 from Armin Le Grand <Ar...@me.com> ---
ALG: Did some experiments:
- It works with D&D; when target is a draw object it gets replaced
- It works when the page has an empty default layout frame (this can be used
for slideshow creation - edit the master to have those frames where you want,
add empty pages and insert/from file
I am not sure, but it may have been removed by purpose...

Hi Armin,
Sorry, I should have written D&D from explorer, not web-browser! Details:
Dragging and dropping from the Nautlilus file browser (or file explorer; note,
not a web browser).
Nautilus version 2.28.4
Linux version: CentOS Release 6.4 (Final)
Kernel Linux 2.6.32-358.6.1.el6.x86
GNOME 2.28.2
Running on Intel Xeon CPU E5-1620 0 @ 3.60Ghz (eight cores)
Image type: PNG
I have uploaded some images and a presentation in which the error occured. My
exact steps were:
1. Create new (empty) presentation
2. Drag in a PNG image (blah.png) onto the first slide. (Slide 1)
3. Copy the slide
4. Paste the slide (after Slide 1)
5. Go to new slide (Slide 2)
6. Click on image in Slide 2, then:
- Insert -> Picture -> From File
- Choose "blah2.png", click OK
7. Go back to slide 1
8. Wait a few seconds
9. Go back to slide 2
After 9. the image has reverted back to the initial PNG file that was D&Ded.
I have also tested this 'bug' using the following variation:
1. Create new (empty) presentation
2. Drag in a PNG image onto the only slide
3. Click on image in Slide 1, then:
- Insert -> Picture -> From File
- 'Choose another PNG file, click OK'
4. Make a new slide and goto it
5. Wait a few seconds (10s??)
6. Go back to Slide 1
After 6. the image has reverted back to the original PNG file that was D&Ded.
Based on what I see I reckon that you're suggestion is correct. You do have to
wait a little while, say 10-15s or so before the copied image reverts back to
the original.
Thanks again Armin, let me know how you go.
Steve

Unable to reproduce on:
Windows 7 64-bit
OpenOffice 4.1.0 AOO410m18(Build:9764) - Rev. 1589052 2014-04-22 11:43:54
(Di, 22 Apr 2014)
Drag and Drop from Windows Explorer.
I attempted to replicate the bug with the following variations:
- Using .odp and .png files attached to this report
- Using .odp file attached to the report and different .png files
- Using new Impress presentation and .png files attached to this report
- Using new Impress presentation and different .png files
In all cases, the image on the second slide was replaced and did not revert to
the original image after navigating away from, then back to, the second slide.
I also followed the two reproduction scenarios the original poster included in
Comment 3, waiting both a few seconds before returning to the second slide and
waiting tens of seconds (10, 20, and 30) before returning to the second slide.
I was unable to reproduce the bug using either scenario.
Stephen, would you please include additional information as to what, exactly,
you were did when you resized and positioned the image on the first slide prior
to copying the slide?
I would recommend the following tests be performed as follow-up tests:
• Execute the reproduction steps using images of various formats
• Execute the reproduction steps using images of various file
• Execute the reproduction steps multiple times, varying the way the image was
resized and/or positioned on the slide
• Execute the reproduction steps using keyboard commands for Insert Image From
File – Alt-i-u-f
• Execute the reproduction steps, but change how the initial image is inserted

I think Armin fixed this (drag and drop) together with bug 123922 for
OpenOffice 4.1.0, so he can probably close it if it's fixed in 4.1.

--- Comment #13 from Andrea Pescetti <pe...@apache.org> ---
I opened bug 123922 for the "replace a picture when a picture is selected"
behavior (item 2 of the original post), since the discussion here mostly
concerned drag&drop.
So discussion about item 2 can continue there (and my opinion is that the
behavior changed, but the old one should be restored).

ALG: Hi Stephen, sorry for the delay, but we were busy with the release.
Checked on xubuntu64bit with AOO400 RC2 with your files, could not reproduce.
The files get swapped out, but on changing back to the slide they get reloaded
and shown as expected.
Questions:
- In step (6) resp. (3) in 2nd example do you have 'Link' checked in the
'Insert Picture' dialog or not?
- After that, do you have both pictures inserted to the slide or not?

ALG: It concerns to many, but I will take a look ;-)
All I can D&D from a browser is the image link, gets pasted as text. Do you
have a test page and which Image to drag? I will just use D&D from explorer
instead. Could not reproduce, though.
But I have a suggestion: The file D&D from a browser *may* be linked and point
to the temp file location where the browser stores the picture internally. When
you replace that picture it may be exchanged internally, but the link to the
browser's temp file may be kept. When then changing slides the AOO-internal pic
data will be flushed and reloaded when the slide gets back visible -> the
linked temporary browser file will reload, viola, the old picture is back.
Please help to reproduce
- How exactly do you D&D from browser? Which System? WHich Linux? Which
desktop?
- Can you safe the presentation where this happens and attach here, please?
Maybe I can see/prove something when looking in the file.
Thanks!

I think this is an error, taking a look...

followed your directions but the second image was maintained. I also tried by
creating a new presentation but again could not recreate the defect.

My system specifications
Operating System: Windows 8 64bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2365M CPU @ 1.40GHz
Memory: 4.0GB RAM
I was unable to replicate this defect.
Steps I took to try to replicate defect:
1. Create new presentation
2. Drag in a PNG image (blah.png) onto the first slide. (Slide 1)
3. Copy the slide
4. Paste the slide (after Slide 1)
5. Go to new slide (Slide 2)
6. Click on image in Slide 2, then:
- Insert -> Picture -> From File
- Choose "blah2.png", click OK
7. Go back to slide 1
8. Wait 10 seconds
9. Go back to slide 2
As stated by Andrea Pescetti, the behavior of the Insert- Picture- From file
has been changed/updated. Should we not deem this bug as fixed?

Note that Drag & Drop could not be the main factor here. I noticed this too in
recent versions (where "recent" surely goes back to 3.3, so not recent at all).
Basically, the behaviour of Insert - Picture - From file when a picture is
already selected has now changed. I prefer the old one.
Old: with a picture selected in Impress, insert a new picture with Insert -
Picture - From file: the new picture replaces the old one and takes its size
and settings. This is very convenient when you want to import several pictures
all with the same size (you duplicate the slide, then replace the image).
New: with a picture selected in Impress, insert a new picture with Insert -
Picture - From file: the new picture is imported alongside the old one (i.e.,
OpenOffice does not care that a picture was selected when giving the command).
I find it less convenient than the old behaviour.
Stephen: Drag and Drop aside, is this the problem you wanted to describe? Or
should I open a different issue for this?
