Karaf 3 hangs on AWS instance of RHEL 6.5

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.5 (Santiago)
Linux hostname 2.6.32-358.14.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Jun 17 15:54:20 EDT
2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Firewall status: down

user@host /opt/user/apache-karaf-3.0.0 $bin/karaf
karaf: Ignoring predefined value for KARAF_HOME

...and there it stays.  Netstat shows no new ports opened. 

Ideas? Clues? Troubleshooting tips?
