[JIRA] Created: (CAY-894) CM Usability: Welcome Screen (Panel)

CM Usability: Welcome Screen (Panel)
------------------------------------

                 Key: CAY-894
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/cayenne/browse/CAY-894
             Project: Cayenne
          Issue Type: New Feature
          Components: CayenneModeler GUI
            Reporter: Thomas Bernhard
            Assignee: Andrus Adamchik

Add a Welcome Screen (Panel) to CM when no Project is open.
This makes any application look professional, and it gives new users confidence (in contrast to a big blank green screen), and it's of course all about the "first impression" :).

This method is practiced even by IDEs (Eclipse, IntelliJ, but also by any desktop application that wants to look professional, e.g. "http://www.productiveme.com/doc/tutorial/1.png" )

Hi Ari!

So it is OK if I just insert the about logo? And what about color palette? Currently about screen is blank white and the site is beige-orange. Can i leave the gradient paint? Are round buttons OK?
And yes, any images would be appreciated. Or maybe you have other suggestions.

Cheers,
Andrey

I'd rather we kept this as much in line with the web site as possible. Not because I think it is perfect, but because we should have a uniform single brand.

Andrey, I've realised that the photoshop file is checked into svn.

If you don't have Photoshop, let me know what you want and I'll create it for you. I need just the dimensions really.

       Resolution: Fixed
    Fix Version/s: 3.0

Nice work Andrey. It looks really good, especially the red rollover which ties into the whole Cayenne red theme. I only made some inconsequential changes to naming and grammar in the javadocs and it all works well on my OSX10.5 machine.

    Attachment: welcome-screen.jpg

That's suggested prototype of the welcome screen.
Here are two buttons: New (project) and Open (Project). The right list contains recent projects' filenames. Top line will be just "Project..." (open via file dialog). Selection in the list appears when mouse is over the line.
Hope you'll like it :)

I think we are in a position to make the decision regarding the
graphics. I don't think there are existing branding guidelines that
would prevent us from doing it with or without the feather.

----------------------------------

I think this looks nice, but please stick with the existing logo and don't change the typeface. The whole unit needs to sit as a consistent whole through the welcome screen, about screen and the web site. I might have some layered Photoshop files or other resources if that helps you... let me take a look.

    Attachment: 894.zip

The new welcome screen. Functionality is trivial: new project, open project, open recent project.
Note that SVN patches do not support binary files (at least I failed to create one), so there's an archive with images and code patch
