Code snippets from oooforum in AOO website?

The spammers were so successful at www.oooforum.org that it is not responsive for several days now (much more than little outages we have been used to in the past). So it seems that the forum is dead.

We had talked about that in the EN forum and we had made a backup of the content, especially the code snippets. A possibility would be to make a dedicated support section in the AOO website and to have one page per topic.

I take that since forums are public, as long as the author of each post is kept, there is no problem putting the content online in the AOO website.
Thoughts?

If no objection, do we need to file a JIRA ticket?

I used httrack, which grabs the pages and nothing more. I assume that he
probably did the same. I am just sad that I lost my copy :-(

I think Floris V (moderator) on the forum has a dump also.

If the oooforum is transferred, I think the archive should be read-only, so that ongoing conversations and modifications take place on the threads of the current forum.

If you think that there is some way I can help, let me know. I am pretty
good with PERL and have written numerous programs to troll large data
stores cleaning files with complex internal structure.

Because 3rd parties, not Apache, own the copyright and it is not appear
that we have a license to copy this material.

Copyright infringement.

This does not matter. Running a web archive of 3rd party content is
legally more complicated and I don't see that the ASF is set to do this.

3rd party archives already exist. Can't we just link to them?

We need to have a conversation with Ed. His permission alone may or may
not be sufficient. But the conversation should at least help us understand
what is possible.

Why do we need any approval?
As long as the author of each post is visible, what would be the infringement?
This would be archive pages, not editable, exactly like web archives.

This is a safeguarding operation. Is there really a mandatory approval from Ed needed?
I'm not an expert in IP, anybody would have an idea?

It's on shared hosting so one would still have to associate it to
207.7.148.2 in the hosts file or such, but indeed you make an important
point; oooforum.org is three things: a domain, a website and content. As
discussed earlier, the cleanest way to get the content is to get
everything transferred to Apache, since that way we can avoid legal
complexities. And indeed the site hosting can expire before or after the
domain, so we have no clear deadline.

> Getting a domain transferred needs a signature from the current domain

I personally try to stay out of the domain
squatting/reselling/pre-booking business since it's rather unclear to me
in general. But here the issue is that indeed this transfer would
concern only the oooforum.org domain name, no site and no content. So
the best that could come from that is that we simply redirect
oooforum.org to our official forum. But I believe that users are mostly
concerned with saving the content in some form, so getting oooforum.org
this way would not help with users' concerns.

Regards,
   Andrea.

If you have a handle on how to sign up now, I am more than happy to do
that, and I am ready to pay for it. If I do that, however, I would
prefer to not have it floating in my name. I mean, I don't care if my
name is attached to it, but, I would prefer if that sort of thing were
transferred over to the project and I don't mind using my money to get
it there.

If you have a feeling for how I can make that happen, let me know. If
details not germane to the list need to be discussed, feel free to drop
me a direct email.

Just because the dns name expires the site remains active, adressable by ip
addr.

Getting a domain transferred needs a signature from the current domain
owner, whereas we can sign up for it now, and when it becomes available in
5 month we automatically get it.

The site itself might expire long before that, I cannot find public records
about when that is due.

I wasn't considering the possibility of such a sad and tragic event, I
really hope it's another person too. In any case, the site is still
unresponsive/unusable. If we can get, in some way, the oooforum.org
domain transferred to Apache, and a full backup of the content (the
database and the phpbb code, with all mods applied), we can probably
move that forum to Apache with no legal worries (and then we'd use it as
an archive only, and transition users to the official forum).

Otherwise, everything will be gone in 5 months when oooforum.org
expires, if nobody is going to renew it.

Why do you need to hear from Ed before you mirror the data. He is rarely
responsive.

http://web.archive.org/web/20140322204726/http://www.oooforum.org/

I can send Ed a text message to his cell phone later today if you will
consider an affirmative response from him via text to be sufficient. I
did send an email to all of the email accounts that I have for him. If
he does not respond to that, I will give him a call. When I googled him
based on name and phone number, I found an obituary that matches the
name, age, and location. Hoping it is not the same person.

It seems http://oooforum.org/ is still unresponsive. Of course, we can't

I made an attempt at contacting him too, to confirm that the project

Not sure about this. Hagar wrote he has some stuff, but I don't know if
that is a full dump (PHP code, database, attached files) which would
allow us to restore the forum, or if it is just a collection of pages
downloaded somehow. I'm not aware of any other archives than Hagar's one.

I just dropped Ed another email, this time I copied the four known email
addresses that I have for him. My note reads as follows:

Ed,

Sorry for blasting this email to so many email addresses, but, I was
hoping to get an update on the OOoForum site.

Also, depending on your plans, do you have objections if the official
Apache OpenOffice group mirrors the original content (they have a copy,
I used to have a copy from August 2013, but, when I rebuilt my computer,
but the drive it was on is gone; figures).

It seems so. It has been the case for a very long time now. For a while,
I was able to get in every now and then to lock out some of the more
aggressive spammers who had hundreds of spam posts, but, it was a losing
battle without the actual admin doing something to stop it.

How recent is your backup? I pulled a backup a while back (august 2013)
that I stored on an 'archival' drive, but, I lost it when I rebuilt my
computer (more specifically, I did not move the copy onto the new
machine and I just wiped the drive two weeks ago and did not think to
copy that off first). I am attempting to pull a copy now, will see if
it works now that the site is hammered and seems to rarely respond.

I would be very pleased if you would be able to do this. Let me know if
I am able to help somehow.

Historically, Ed did return my email, but he has not answered my last post.

I am not aware of any claim (ever) of copyright (or similar) on the
material after it had been posted. Off hand, I would say that if that
were an issue, then there would be a problem with other archive sites
for the same material... I do have his cell phone number (assuming he
has not changed it). I called him once a few years back. I figure that
if he does not respond to my email, however, that he simply does not
want to talk about it. My opinion is that if you have a copy, you should
simply use it.

Thanks!

I could retrieve the registration page:
While the administrators and moderators of this forum will attempt to remove or edit any generally objectionable material as quickly as possible, it is impossible to review every message. Therefore you acknowledge that all posts made to these forums express the views and opinions of the author and not the administrators, moderators or webmaster (except for posts by these people) and hence will not be held liable.

You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-oriented or any other material that may violate any applicable laws. Doing so may lead to you being immediately and permanently banned (and your service provider being informed). The IP address of all posts is recorded to aid in enforcing these conditions. You agree that the webmaster, administrator and moderators of this forum have the right to remove, edit, move or close any topic at any time should they see fit. As a user you agree to any information you have entered above being stored in a database. While this information will not be disclosed to any third party without your consent the webmaster, administrator and moderators cannot be held responsible for any hacking attempt that may lead to the data being compromised.

This forum system uses cookies to store information on your local computer. These cookies do not contain any of the information you have entered above; they serve only to improve your viewing pleasure. The e-mail address is used only for confirming your registration details and password (and for sending new passwords should you forget your current one).

By clicking Register below you agree to be bound by these conditions.

So it's not very clear.
The only sentence I see related to license is:
While this information will not be disclosed to any third party without your consent the webmaster, administrator and moderators cannot be held responsible for any hacking attempt that may lead to the data being compromised.

I think, an "officially" contact would be good. If the contact via email
(see Whois info posted on private@) does not work, then perhaps a
contact via UnitedLayer is possible.

It's very good that you have a backup available. As for being able to
re-upload it, if you think that we have better chances if we contact
oooforum "officially" on behalf of the Apache OpenOffice project, we can
of course do so. If there are personal or confidential data involved,

It's still alive but almost unreachable. Our official forum at
forum.openoffice.org is indeed in much, much better shape and if we get
all needed permissions we can repost the content there.

We already had this kind of discussion in November 2011. Since I doubt we can reach Ed, this is a lost cause.

Whoever authored the original code snippets, those individual authors,
are the owners of the copyright for that content. They may have
agreed to publish the content on oooforum.org,. but that does not mean
they gave permission to have it copied and hosted someplace else.
Think of it like this: Code snippets on StackExchange are also
"public" in some sense. But that does not mean we can just copy them
in bulk and rehost them.

Is it possible to approach the operator of oooforum.org and discuss
this? If he is no longer interested in maintaining that website,
maybe he would agree to working with us to transfer the content,
giving us permission? Maybe even transferring the domain name?

> If no objection, do we need to file a JIRA ticket?
>

I'd like to see us first clarify the permissions. Preserving the
author would be sufficient for some Creative Commons licenses, for
example. But it is not clear that this is what we have here. Do we
have any license to copy the content?

Take the initiative, Hagar, giving due credit to the code originators. If there is an objection, the new section can always be removed.

We have some confusion here. The forum that is dead is not the official AOO
forum but the older unofficial forum at www.oooforum.org. As Hagar says, it
is not completely dead, in the sense that it can be reached sometimes with
sufficient patience, but all of the new posts are spam. I checked in mid
April and there was not a single non-spam post over the previous two weeks.
That situation seems to have continued.

Jan, Hagar is talking about Admin rights on the old Forum http://www.oooforum.org/. No one has Admin rights on that forum, so no anti-spam measures can be put in place.

Hagar and Imacat have Admin rights on the current OO Forums hosted by Apache.

Problem is that there is no admin anymore. So I fear there is no one to do that.

If the forum is not dead at all, should we anyway take the initiative and upload the code snippets here or wait for an action from the owner (with no guaranty on the lead time)?

I have noticed the traffic level, but seen from a monitoring POW, there are
no problems with forum.

My guess is that forum have been attacked in the same way our wiki was a
year ago.

To fight that, you need to close for creating accounts, clean the db,
update php2bb, and cross fingers before you open again.
