Not sure if this is useful, but I spent some time analyzing a bunch of test  PDFs from the Adobe Acrobat Engineering website, including a comparison with Adobe's Preflight component. See following blog post (which contains links to both data and raw analysis results):

Needless to say the focus of this work is something Preflight wasn't really designed for, but perhaps this is nevertheless useful.
