Worth noting that multi-week turnarounds on applying patches would not be
a good thing for us :(

Recently, I've been aiming towards simply ignoring patches and
reimplementing from scratch, in order to avoid this problem.   Obviously
this is not a great situation.

If we can apply patches based on somebody saying "just faxed it now and my
machine said it went through", that would be optimal, I think.
