We will need to go through all of our SIMD accelerations in this library and refactor things so that we can build a "fat" binary that includes both AVX2/BMI2-accelerated versions and the non-SIMD versions. That way we can reap the benefits of this work in portable packages like Python wheels / conda packages.
   
   I did a little research and I think I might lean towards macros around [FMV](https://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/FunctionMultiVersioning) for clang/GCC that could enable fallback to a slow version for MSVC (or if we are ambitious maybe generating IF/DEFs accordingly.  I can't seem to find the JIRA that covered this.
