New Subversion user, question on installation

Good afternoon, all...

Brand new Subversion user (but with a fair amount of CVS experience) with a
basic-level installation question that so far I haven't seen specifically
answered...

Fedora Core 2 (and yes, there is a good reason why I'm restricted to Core
2, rather than a later release, for this particular installation) comes
with Subversion version 1.0.x (I forget which "x") installed. I would like
to upgrade to 1.3.2, and plan to build and install from sources rather than
the RPM.

Out of the FC2 box, Subversion is installed in /usr/bin and usr/lib, and I
plan to install the upgrade in the default usr/local/bin and usr/local/lib
locations.

Do I need to completely un-install the FC2 out-of-the-box Subversion
installation first, and if so, what is the best way to do that?

To reduce or even eliminate confusion (both those directories will be
in most peoples' PATHs), it would probably be a good idea to remove
the FC2-supplied version. Unless you have a need to keep 2 versions
around.

Best way to remove is via FC2-provided methods if it was installed
from the FC2 distribution originally. FC2 has yum, correct? You'll
want to remove the subversion packages as well as the various libsvn_*
packages (if they come from a separate RPM; yum is taking forever to
update its own file lists so I don't have that at my fingertips) and
mod_dav_svn.

I didn't say yum, did I? I didn't say DAG, did I? I said David Summers'
SRPM's. This is because David is the Subversion author of the included .spec
files, and has his packages linked to from the main Subversion webpage at
http://the.earth.li/pub/subversion/summersoft.fay.ar.us/pub/subversion/latest/.
These are linked to from the main Subversion web page.

Even there, you can use the .spec files from the tarball to generate a good
RPM, which will list most of the critical dependencies and put things
appropriately in place for FC* on a managed sort of way. Use the rhel-4.x
SRPM's, they seem to be the most up-to-date.

I tried that, didn't work. On FC2, "yum update subversion" only upgrades
from 1.0.2 to 1.0.9, and on FC3 it only upgrades to 1.1.4.

So far I haven't found any RPMs that go up to 1.3.2. Dag Wieers' downloads
page only seems to go up to 1.2.1.

So, as best I can tell, the only thing I can do is install from the
tarball, unless there is something there I missed (no big surprise there...).

Don't. Rebuild from David Summers' SRPM's for RHEL 4.x if you need to, but
seriously, satisfy your software dependencies by staying inside the RPM
system.
