Problems building 2.0a4
Could somebody get me started? I am having trouble getting Apache 2.0a4 to build. I am trying to build using the recommended 2.0a4 download dated June 5, 2000 on the download page (www.apache.org/dist). I am building from the command line:
nmake /f Makefile.win INSTDIR="d:\Apache\Server_2.0a4" installd
I am running Windows NT 4.0 (SP5) on a Pentium 330MHz with plenty of RAM and disk.
When I try to compile, I get the following link error:
LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file "ap.lib"
I couldn't find a rule for making this in the makefile, so I copied my 'ap.lib' from my 2.0a1 build. This seemed to fix things until I got the following link error while making Apache:
http_main.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _ap_process_config_tree
I then got an update of the code from CVS and copied it over the top of my 2.0a4 code... and had various other problems. :)
Could somebody help me out here? Are there a set of updated makefiles for 2.0a4?

Greg,
I am now able to build Apache 2.0a4. I removed 'ap.lib' from the list of
link libraries.
I also added the following to ApacheCore.def:
ap_process_config_tree @407
This seems to have fixed things.

You are correct, that symbol was missing, although only
some seemed to be affected.
The cumulative build fixes, already posted to the newsgroup
comp.infosystems.www.servers.ms-windows in reply to the original
announcement, can be found at
http://dev.apache.org/~wrowe/apache-2_04a.diffs
Hope this helps, that second fix for the build follows...

I'm running into a slightly different problem with this. Same setup, NT and
the 2.0a4 code using
MSVC6.0, however I'm getting an unresolved reference to ap_process_config_tree
when building the apache.exe module. Seems that http_main.c references this
function, which is defined in http_config.c.
My system has http_config.c in ApacheCore. The function isn't exported in
ApacheCore.def and the source has it as a 'void' as opposed to something like
API_EXPORT or CORE_EXPORT (which I assume are the visible functions). This
happens for both Debug and Release.
Anyone clue me in to what I've done wrong ??
Thanks,
G.

First off, ap.dsp is a dead project, the sources moved into the
ApacheCore.dsp project prior to the release of alpha 4.
The attached is needed to patch the alpha 4 release to build debug
mode. The ApacheCore project is incorrectly listing ap.lib in it's
'link' options, only under the debug model.
Attached is the fix, and I do apologize for your troubles!

Thanx Jeff & Bill. Unfortunately, I got the same result when I tried to
build from the project files. I had to copy over ap.lib from my 2.0a1
build. I then got the same unresolved external while linking Apache.
Here are a few more clues/facts/...
I am extracting the archive into a new tree and doing an entire rebuild.
I am having no trouble with my 2.0a1 build.
I am using MSVC 6.0.
I am building in a directory called /Apache/Server_2.0a4.

That's what's killing me, I checked out the tagged version...
I'll dig into it late tommorow, but definately export makefiles. Oh,
there isn't any chance you extracted the 2.0a4 archive over an existing
build, is there?

Can you try building from the MSVC++ project files instead and see how
that goes? If it works, you can then export makefiles from the
project files. (I'm guessing that 2.0a4 didn't ship with makefiles
which match the project files.)
