client apache cxf-2.2 jar dependencies

Hi,

I am using a cxf frontend with the simple client frontend and the aegis databinding. I want my client to be compatible with both 1.5 and 1.6. I don't use JAX-WS

Here are the required jars

--- Mentioned in WHICH_JARS ------
	--- used instead of cxf.jar ----
	cxf-api-2.2.jar
	cxf-common-schemas-2.2.jar
	cxf-common-utilities-2.2.jar
	cxf-rt-bindings-soap-2.2.jar
	cxf-rt-core-2.2.jar
	cxf-rt-databinding-aegis-2.2.jar
	cxf-rt-databinding-jaxb-2.2.jar
	cxf-rt-frontend-simple-2.2.jar
	cxf-rt-transports-http-2.2.jar
	cxf-rt-transports-http-jetty-2.2.jar
	cxf-tools-common-2.2.jar
commons-logging-1.1.1.jar
geronimo-activation_1.1_spec-1.0.2.jar
geronimo-annotation_1.0_spec-1.1.1.jar
geronimo-javamail_1.4_spec-1.5.jar
geronimo-stax-api_1.0_spec-1.0.1.jar
neethi-2.0.4.jar
jaxb-api-2.1.jar
jaxb-impl-2.1.9.jar
XmlSchema-1.4.4.jar
wstx-asl-3.2.6.jar
wsdl4j-1.6.2.jar
xml-resolver-1.2.jar

----- Not mentioned
geronimo-jaxws_2.1_spec-1.0.jar

I have the following questions

1) Why I do need geronimo-jaxws_2.1_spec-1.0.jar? It is not mentioned in WHICH jars? Without it I get a javax/xml/ws/Holder class not found exception in JRE 1.5
2) Is Aegis based on JAXB or is this is meaningless question? Can I have aegis without the jaxb stuff?
3) Is it somehow possible to further trim the list of the dependencies especially the maven modules ones since the other are documented?
4) For example do I need geronimo-javamail_1.4_spec-1.5.jar (I don't use attachments)
5) Is cxf-rt-transports-http-jetty-2.2.jar really required for a client. It was not required in 2.1.3

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the answers.

I provided backtrace for the jar dependencies you requested in other mails

Fair enough. Good to know. Thanks

just saw it.

It is documented as bug in https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CXF-1999

Here is what happens if I remove lib/cxf-rt-transports-http-jetty-2.2.jar from the build.

Maybe I am missing again some configuration since I don't use spring?

This post indicated that the jetty module is actually required...

Re: client apache cxf-2.2 jar dependencies: geronimo activation required backtrace

Posted by Daniel Kulp <dk...@apache.org>.
Digging into this one, I don't think removing activation is going to be
possible. We have to put the attachment in interceptors onto the chain as a
message could come in as a multi-part even if it doesn't have attachments.
Those interceptors use the activation stuff to split things a bit. Thus, I
would say that one will be required.

There are XML files that can be used to map locations for imports in
wsdl/schema to other locations. For example, if your wsdl imports the ws-
addressing schema from http://w3c.org/..., you can use a catalog to say
"whenever you hit that schema, load it from this file on my local computer
instead".

It's very useful for services behind firewalls and such that could not get out
to internet places to get the schemas.

We just use java.util.Logging, mostly to avoid having to pull in some of these
extra jars.

Yep. Looking at the code, Aegis DOES use commons/logging. :-( That's
probably leftover code from pulling it from XFire and probably should be
converted over.

Hi Dan,

Sorry for the late reply. I was out of town.

No problem.

Indeed, it is not required. I was able to get my client running without it.
Q: What are the catalogs anyway?

That wasn't easy to find since my project actually uses commons logging.
Q: Why CXF doesn't use it actively?

Anyway here is the backtrace. From what I can tell it is originated from somewhere in aegis

If you want to actually eliminate the dependancy I am willing to test it...

Thanks for the update. Glad it works now.

BTW: On monday, I also made xml-resolver-1.2.jar optional if you aren't using
any catalogs. Thus, you should be able to get rid of that as well.

I'm also wondering why commons-logging is required. Not sure what is
bringing that in. We don't use it. jaxb doesn't use it. XmlSchema
doesn't. wstx-asl doesn't. Not sure wsdl4j. neethi does use it, but if
your wsdl doesn't have any policies in it, then we wouldn't be creating any
neethi policies so I don't think the logging there would come into play at
all.

Dan,

It works. I tried it with
	apache-cxf-2.2.1-SNAPSHOT.tar.gz Wed Apr 01 07:28:56 GMT+00:00 2009 29806907
The date and time is important otherwise I tested it wrongly (won't be the first time :-))

I was able to get rid of
	geronimo-javamail_1.4_spec-1.5.jar (done in previous step)
	geronimo-jaxws_2.1_spec-1.0.jar
	cxf-rt-transports-http-jetty-2.2.jar

So to recap

This one should now be fixed. It would be great if you can try tomorrows
snapshots (will deploy overnight) to double check. Thanks for catching it.

Hmmm... That's not good. Is there a stack trace or similar? Not sure
where that would be referenced in the above. Definitely something we should
try to eliminate.

No. We use JAXB internally for a lot of things. A lot of the spring config
parsing is based on JAXB. Some of the wsdl extensor parsing is JAXB, etc...

You MAY be able to get rid of javamail and activation if you don't use
attachments or MTOM or any type of interceptors that use SAAJ (but they
wouldn't work for you anyway since you don't have saaj in your list). Give
it a try and see.

It shouldn't be required for 2.2 either and in my tests, it isn't. I've been
trying to get a testcase that shows that it is required and so far no-one has
stepped up to provide one. If I can get a testcase, then sure, I'll take a
look. (hmm.... I bet my testcases all use spring. I wonder if that's why.
Yours wouldn't.) Anyway, a simple (preferrably maven based, but not
required) test case would be a HUGE help.
