ssh cvs access from Windows

On Linux I have cvs access via ssh working great, but I cannot seem to get
it to work on Windows. Would anybody with a working setup like this on
windows please share their configuration? I am currently using Putty and
either WinCVS or TortoiseCVS, but I am willing to try other programs to
get this to work.

Thanks,

I regularly use both the cvs built into eclipse and cygwin's cvs
binaries from my windows boxes with no problems. I had initial troubles
changing my repository from /home/cvspublic to /home/cvs but after that
it's been peachy.

Thank you to everybody for the answers. I finally got it to work when
I noticed that when using Putty's plink program and a saved session that
you use the session name instead of the host name. This tidbit came from:
http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.53b/htmldoc/Chapter7.html#7.5

Instead of mentioning "cvs.apache.org"...
  cvs -d :ext:tim@cvs.apache.org:/home/cvs co cocoon-2.1
...mention the name of a saved Putty session, such as "cocoon":
  cvs -d :ext:tim@cocoon:/home/cvs co cocoon-2.1
and now it works.

Tim,

I use Pageant and PLink. Pageant is a program that supplies private keys to programs like PuTTY or
PLink. You can get them fom the Putty website. I create a public key using Puttygen, and upload it
to my account and put it in my .authorized_keys file or wherever it belongs. I load the associated
private key into Pageant. After that, it all Just Works, provided my CVSROOT is set correctly:

:ext:tony@minotaur.apache.org/home/cvs

I also need to put plink.exe in my path, and then set the CVS_RSH env var to "plink.exe".

After that, things like Eclipse or the cli win32 version of CVS work correctly.

If you need any more help just ask.

At the end it's only installing PuTTY (the complete package) and setting
the environment variable CVS_RSH to "your/path/to/PuTTY/plink.exe",
isn't it? Of course there are alternatives like adding PuTTY to PATH
variable and shortening CVS_RSH to plink.exe, but in principle it's the
same.

Hi Joerg,

I don't know why for sure. My WinCVS version is 1.3.13.1 Beta 13 (Build 1)
and PuTTY version is 0.53b. Could it be because I never set the CVS_RSH
environment variable?

In WinCVS Preferences[Settings] the paths to RSA private key file directory
and plink are set absolute.

I do not need to do this, for me it works as is. Maybe version dependent?

Yep.

Most of anything I know comes from
http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=768&group_id=1
and
http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=761&group_id=1

But a wicki page would be good. Let me know how you want to proceed. One
of the pros and cons between dialog based and command line based cvs clients
is writing a good doc where dialog boxes are used. Do we want snapshots of
them? Also do we want to describe WinCVS, Eclipse and NetBeans (any other?)
approaches?

Thanks for checking. I did resolve it (the same way you mention above):
  http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=xml-cocoon-dev&m=107151966617686&w=2

BTW, my Windows configuration uses:
  Putty version 0.53b
  WinCVS version 1.2.0

Perhapse we should collect the fragments of knowledge from all the various
sources into one coherent wiki page?

Hi Timothy,

Have you resolved this yet? I could push some snapshots of the WinCVS and
PuTTY configurations(for a sourceforge project) to you if it helps. One of
the things that made WinCVS and PuTTY work together for me was saving the
PuTTY configuration as a "Session" and use the session name as the host
address in the WinCVS preference so that plink can use it.

There is a good description somewhere on the Forrest website (in the
faq or howto's). If you follow that, you can simply use cvs from
the commandline as you do on Linux.
Other programs, like Eclipse work without a problem if you install
a ssh client on windows.
