I had the same problem for a sink. In general, the errors in the config are not being logged. I've modified a couple of files to fix this. Here is an example of what it would log:
2012-08-31 13:49:27,449 WARN properties.PropertiesFileConfigurationProvider: Error in configuration file '/etc/flume-ng/conf/flume.conf' : [avro-sink - channel [ERROR] : PROPERTY_VALUE_NULL]
