[users@httpd] Beginner Virtual Host question
Greetings!!
I have just recently established a new ISP and am running Apache 2.?? and RedHat 8.0. I develop software and other such items for the web and want to create a virtual host to develop from. I started with this:
<Virtual Host *>
ServerName development
DocumentRoot /httpd/development
</VirtualHost>
Apache threw a fit with an error stating the mixing *-ports and non *-ports was a no-no.
What did I do wrong and is there a simple solution?? I really would like to know.

CNAME whath?
Where is the "hostname" where the alias (CNAME) must point to?
Try something like:
www.fatgirls.com CNAME www.prettygirls.com
Also, the A record is wrong. It must have 4 doted quads: 200.212.232.192 as exemple.
It is a A (Adress) record not a master zone...
ping and dig are your friends...
Take a brainstorm of DNS: this is the best you can do to yourself.

Hello Scott:
I have a setup similar to yours, but mine is
not working. I'm sure it's a DNS problem. How do you set up your
foward mapping file to allow virtual hosting.
Note: I run my own DNS servers, so I can make any changes you suggest.
My setup looks something like this:
prettygirls.com IN A 123.456.789
www.prettygirls.com cname
prettygirls.com
www.fatgirls.com cname
prettygirls.com
www.reallyFatGirls.com cname
prettygirls.com
can you tell me what I'm doing wrong.
Thank You
Ezra Taylor

Here's a copy of mine - hope it helps
NameVirtualHost 111.222.333.444 <- one of these per IP on the server if more than one
<VirtualHost 111.222.333.444>
DocumentRoot /home/domains/www.domain.net
ServerName www.domain.net
ServerAlias domain.net
</VirtualHost>
If you want log files per domain, or want to include SSI, then do it like this:
<VirtualHost 111.222.333.444>
DocumentRoot /home/domains/www.domain.com
ServerName www.domain.com
ServerAlias domain.com
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /home/domains/www.domain.com/cgi-bin/
# Allow Server-Side Includes
<Directory /home/domains/www.domain.com>
AddHandler server-parsed shtml html htm
Options +Includes
</Directory>
CustomLog /home/domains/www.domain.com/logs/access_log combined
ErrorLog /home/domains/www.domain.com/logs/error_log
</VirtualHost>
