CIFS (aka SMB) is part of the VFS sandbox which is not distributed as part of a VFS release. It is in the sandbox simply because it has not undergone enough testing. It uses a fairly old version of JCIFS, which is licensed under the LGPL. To get the SMB support included in a formal release you should check out the source from subversion, build it and test it in your environment. Then submit any patches required to bring it up to a more recent version of JCIFS, and to fix any bugs you find. The sandbox also has lots of checkstyle issues so those would want to be cleaned up. This may not take a great deal of effort but I've never personally tested it against a real file system.

I wouldn't imagine this would take a great deal of effort as the unit tests passed the last time I built the sandbox.
