I had the same problem specifically with defaultMaxActive.  What has been
discovered pertains to changes made in dbcp 1.1 (pre-RC2):

-defaultMaxActive has been renamed to maxActive
-the base class InstanceKeyDataSource of SharedPoolDataSource was not public
preventing the beanutils library from setting the property. 

So change your property files and download the latest dbcp 1.1.
