* add usage information and ways to get to it (-h, etc)
* support multiple methods with multiple levels per method
* de-hadoop-ify

* add some bash safety


it's pretty obvious as this point that there is a lot of code that could be shared between smart-apply-patch and test-patch so probably worth the effort to start modularizing stuff out of test-patch
