Not a fan of this patch, I'm afraid. It's a nice idea, but is a new feature and the implementation is limited to just the "asset:" binding prefix. What about the "classpath:" binding prefix? What about future, user-defined binding prefixes? There isn't a good way to implement this for all cases without some significant restructuring inside Tapestry.
